Hyper V backups, do I need additional sockets?

Just wanted to make sure I'm understanding this right.
I've got 2 hyper-V servers, 1 hosting 6 VMs, another hosting 2.
Do the 'sockets' apply to physical sockets on the physical hyper-v hosts, or to the virtual sockets assigned to VM's?
According to this article it seemed to me like it applied to physical, but the documentation wasn't clear.

Physical sockets. If you both your servers are 1 or 2 CPU Socket Servers, then two base VM licenses - one for each server is fine.
